There is a popular salsa song from the 90’s called Aparentmente by Tony Vega. I haven’t heard it in a while but the lyrics mysteriously crept to the forefront of my thoughts.
The first few lines of the chorus goes,
“Aparentemente tú le quieres, tú le amas
Pero si esta casa hablara
Te diría lo contrario“
This roughly translates to (and not word-for-word so we can catch the nuance):
“Apparently you love him but if these four walls could talk, they would tell you the opposite”
Many believers shout their love for Jesus by making sure they do all of the loud outward things. There is a level of cool and even edge to displaying your Christianity.
I don’t mean being bold about following Jesus. I mean, there is social hype around proclaiming God’s favor. You might even be jealous of this type of person because they walk around with an ‘I-do-it-all’ Christian badge of honor.
Dressing like a glorified Christian does nothing if your heart isn’t in Jesus’ glory.
Apparently, you love Him.
1 Samuel 16:7 (NIV)
…The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.
There are those who do their evangelical duty and share a Scripture everyday. Share all the verses you want, God’s Word does not return void (Amen), but I do wonder are they verses that you live or just read?
I don’t want to be legalistic. I do believe the world is very confused and even enraged about Jesus because of Christian clothing not filled by Jesus-followers.
But if these four walls could talk…
James 1:22-24 (ERV)
Do what God’s teaching says; don’t just listen and do nothing. When you only sit and listen, you are fooling yourselves. 23 Hearing God’s teaching and doing nothing is like looking at your face in the mirror 24 and doing nothing about what you saw. You go away and immediately forget how bad you looked.
When we associate ourselves with the Lord we are tempted to flaunt His righteousness rather than live in His righteousness.
They would tell you the opposite.
These people come near to me with their mouth
and honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
Their worship of me
is based on merely human rules they have been taught.
Apparently, you love Jesus. But the witnesses would tell you the opposite.
If we are all in communion with God just as we appear to be, then we have the Holy Spirit living in our four walls working to make our outside (actions) and inside (heart) look like those of Jesus.
I won’t sit here and barrage you with your shortcomings. They are mine also–oh, Nineveh.
Test me, Lord, and try me,
examine my heart and my mind;
What is something that God is asking you to do or stop doing? What heart change can we pray over together? Let’s live the character of Christ!
Moxie (noun): force of character, determination, or nerve.
This is my sixth installation for Moxie Monday. I’ve found courage in sharing my story and want to keep that going by sparking the flame in others. These Monday posts are motivational in essence to start off a great week!
